I'm a Chemical Engineering student at the University of Washington, and will be doing some summer work involving extrusion/compounding. While I will continue to siphon material off the net and try to get the processes down before I actually begin work, I thought I'd ask here as well, with a basic request: can anyone either refer me to a couple of comprehensive and informative sites, or give me their own broad take on the purposes and principles behind extrusion and compounding? I'm interested in both the theory/principle behind the two processes and the practical considerations and concerns. Thanks much for your time! Charles Simpson IP: Logged |

quote: Charles, Your couldn't do much better than look at Chris Rauwendaal's book "Polymer Extrusion" (ISBN 3-446-16080-9) Published by Carl Hanser Verlag (1990) and distributed in the USA by Oxford University Press. Charles Go to www.knovel.com, they have all the papers from SPE's ANTEC conferences- there This is a link to an online polymer processing textbook you might find useful http://online.sfsu.edu/~jge/html/body_textbook.html [This message has been edited by Steve H (edited 06-18-2001).] IP: Logged |

Try looking over "Compounding Equipment and Operation" by Dave Todd offered by Hanser Gardner. It covers a number of compounding operations both twin, batch and single screw. IP: Logged |

Charles Steve recommended getting TAPPI's Film Extrusion Manual. I would highly recommended. It has come in very handy. Also, you might want to see about getting SPE's Extrusion Division's Extrusion Solutions, either on CD or hard copy. This has lots of little hints on extrusion that you wouldn't normally get in the classroom. Hope that helps. Jeff de los Santos IP: Logged |

Hi Jeff The Tappi Film Manual is a great resource- their Coating Manual is also worth buying. How did you get on with your quest for a Graff melt T/C? Steve IP: Logged |

quote: Well, Steve, I finally found Graff's website and have emailed them a total of six times - three in English & three in German. As of yet, I have not heard anything from them. Guess they don't feel we're important enough. Jeff de los Santos IP: Logged |
