I have been getting a number of bubbles in my ABS extrusion process, what area should I be looking at to correct this? IP: Logged |

Moisture in/on ABS resin is the obvious choice- has this problem just started to occur, or have you changed MBX's, or started to use other additives. Tell us a little about your extruder too- LD, size, vented/unvented, configuration of line, drying equipment etc. Steve IP: Logged |

Steve: I'm running a 4.5" NRM vented 28:1 sheet line w/o and change to masterbatch. Further, we are not pre-drying the ABS and hoping to remove any moisture from the vent. We are currently seeing some bubbles in the sheet and are wondering if we should pre-dry as we haven't had to in the past. IP: Logged |

I think it sounds like a moisture problem, are you storing your raw material in a different location?- or buying larger quantities, and the longer storage time is allowing it to absorb more moisture than previously. Have you checked that your barrel vent/vacuum pump are working correctly- ie the vent isn't blocked with degraded ABS. Can you borrow, trial some drying capacity to test the moisture theory?- preheating the ABS would increase your output slightly (with a 4.5" his may not be much of an advantage) Let us know what you find.
