G'day Mathieu

The materials used in die construction depend on what material(s) the die is intended to process and for how long.

For sheet dies, factors for material selection include:

  • Strenght-Ability to flex
  • Purity- No inclusions in the material
  • Corrosion Resistance

Common die body materials for sheet dies are

  • Pre-Hardened Super P20 Tool Steel (approx 4140)Hardness Rc 36-39 with Duplex Hard Chrome Plating .0010"-.0015" Thick on the flow surfaces. Lips and lands polished to 2RMS
  • 15-5 Stainless Steel, condition H1025 with a hardness of Rc 38-42

Walter Michaeli's book Extrusion Dies For Plastics And Rubber will give you some more info.
