Hi, How critical is the size radius at the base of an extruder screw flight? I have a 3-1/2" OD screw with a 1/2" channel depth. I would like a 1/2" radius on the back side and 3/8" radius on the front side. My manager insists i put 1/16" on the front side to "push" the material out. Are there any guidelines for sizing radii? Best Regards, Steve R IP: Logged |

In my opinion small radius encourage stagnent areas, while weaking the flight. It has been shown that there is no performance gains from using smaller radius. Tom C IP: Logged |

As far as a "rule of thumb" goes, most screw suppliers will provide a trail radius equal to the channel depth w/ a lead radius equal to 1/2 of the trail radius. In other words, for a .625 " channel depth the trail radius would be 5/8 and the lead radius 5/16... tom ------------------ www.ppsincorp.com IP: Logged |
