What clearance should a 90mm, constant pitch, constant depth, edge trim feed auger be rebuilt to? the SPI guideline for extrusion screws.

The unit in question feeds cast film edge trim back into a cast film line, about 1 L/D beyond the main screws feed throat. Its barrel is warmed by a water jacket.

You aren't gonna ask the question then disappear, are ya? :-)

Is the fluff is being crammed vertically? Or is this side-fed into the barrel?

Nah, reckon I'll hang round for a while Bob

It's a side feed, edge trim is drawn off, granulated and then blown back to the reclaim auger. My thought was to get it rebuilt to SPI's guide lines.

Okay, darn. I could have gotten my hands on a vertical crammer design, but I think the clearances have to change for a horizontal auger.

I'd bet it also depends on the stiffness of the root of the auger.

Hi Bob
What is your opinion on the merits of a vertical crammer into the main feed throat over a "side stuffer"- I have to think that the latter falls into the "not a good idea" catorgory.

Well honestly I bet they could both be made to work, but I would prefer to have the assistance of gravity to get the fluff into the extruder (it's tough enough to convey as it is).

On the other hand, a machine like the Erema sutffs the screw from the side, and works much better than a vertical crammer ever would in that situation, however it uses centrifugal force to cram the screw, which is entirely different than an auger.
