Dear Forum Members,

For single screw PP cast film extruder screws running intermittendly, what does your experience tell about their lifetime?

To check the health of an extruder, what operating parameters and screw/barrel dimensions tell more sound/reliable data on a quick check up?

Thanks for your comments.

The primary wear components are the screws and barrels. If the extruder was built with a hardened screw and barrel, and the screw was designed correctly, then you should get 5 years of running before needing any replacements.

The extruder will likely run 10 years or more before any gear box problems show up, provided the oil is changed as required.

Aside from wear and tear and normal maintenance issues, extruders seem to last 50 years or more. It is likely most of the components will have been replaced in that 50 years, except for the gearbox case and the frame.

The only thing that actually retires an extruder are advances in technology.
