We are experiencing a problem of very high pressure (8000-9000psi ) on our 2.5 inch extrusion line for wire & cable. This is used line that we recently installed. We have other lines of same size and crosshead where the same products run at much lower pressure (3500psi)at the same temp & speeds. Also the extruder is running very close to max amperage on the motor. We hear a very loud noise when the extruder is running and suspect that the gear case or thrust bearing is worn.
I am not sure if the gearcase problem has anything to do with the pressure or there are two separate issues. Please let me know.

AC, welcome to the single screw forum-Have you confirmed that all elements/controllers & T/C's are working correctly? What about screen packs/breaker plate, any blinding/blockages there. Are there any restrictors between the die and screw tip (some times done to improve mixing or reduce surging)

Running at that kind of pressure is going to cause premature failure of the thrust bearing.

AC,

Steve is right.

A very common problem with extruder startups is cross wiring of thermocouple and heaters. I would check that everything is set up correctly.
