We have installed with one no. Palletizing unit (JSW Model no.P380-13H) in our LDPE plant. Installed capacity of Extruder is 13.5 tons/hrs. We use 12 no.AMN BMS1 blades (c03.2615.1NY)& Flexible knife holder. Recently we observed uneven cutting of pallets. This leads to forceful stoppage of plant. We obsrved 2 no. knives broken from shank(root). We could not traced broken upper part of knives. Two knives developed crack along the width of shank at the starting point of cutting edge. Dent marks observed at the back face of all knife body. Cutting edges of all remaining 10 knives observed ok with uniform wear. This set of knives along with flexible cutter head was installed 4-5 months back. During the phenomenon of uneven pallet cutting ,cutter motor current remained steady & within the normal zone.Die plate surface inspected but no , irregularity like scouring / dent observed. Most of the time PH of PCW remained near 7 (~ 6.8 or so). With the above observations , please let us know various reasons of such type of failure. Also please suggest us various checks required before installing & after installing the cutter head/knives in palletizer. This is required to prevent the such occurence & consequent production loss in future.
If need more information , pl feel free to ask.

I would take samples to the broken peices to a local university with a good metalurgical background and ask for a failure analysis. Could be there was a crack in the metal before you even started using it. There are many reasons for metal failure, and the analysis may help point your investigation in the right direction.
