We are attemting tomake a composite plank out of N6 carpet fiber and either P.P. and/or P.E.T.
preliminary runs have been good; however, the physical characteristics have been lacking.
Characteristics we desire are:
Strength...we have this.
durability...we have this
Fastener abilities...this is the problem.
Driving a nail into the product, and getting a pull strength of at least 80 ft. lbs.

Varying temps, and component percentages has gotten some excellent results, yet the testing has been failing by either splitting when we use the nail gun, or, the nail will not penetrate.
I realize there are a couple additives we could use, and have tried small percentages of HDPE.
Although some of the characteristics were there with the HDPE, the cost is not in the budget, and we have ample supplies of N6, N66, PP, PET.
Have yet to try a compatibilizer,
other possibilities we have considered were Kraton, and Fusabond; however, again the product we are producing won't allow this additional cost...Any suggestions will be considered. Thanks in Advance

Are you bonding the Nylon 6 and PET together with the PP, or are you melting all of the compoenets? None of these polymer are compatible with each other.

Try some percentage of fine tire regrind crumb rubber. I believe it is inexpensive.

Other items to try;

Mica
Talc
Fiberglass

These items may need to be pre-compounded to work well in your process.

Good Luck,

Tom C

Thanks Tom for your reply, and we will try the crumb rubber. We are mixing the raw components, and extruding through a single screw M.D. ext. Normally, we extrude a thin sheet of the same materials, and we have excellent results, good end product, nail, screw, score and cut.
Zone temps have been lowered and we are currently at 415 degrees.

415F may or may not melt the nylon and PET depending on the screw design.

Good Luck.

Looks like the answer to your question posted in the Pub forum is yes Pyro, welcome to the Single Screw Forum too.
If you haven't aready seen it, this paper might be of interest Process Optimization for Reactive Blending and Compatibilization of PA 6 and PET in Extrusion http://www.sperecycling.org/PDF%20Files/0341.PDF
