Hi i am a new member to this forum and would like some advice on the optimum size screw and barrel to process platinum cured silicon (cold extrusion). would i be correct in using a 2.5 inch 10:1 screw?. if vso what would be the best compression ratio?. thanks in anticipation. IP: Logged |

There is not too much information out there about silicone extrusion. Try your equipment vendor. ------------------ Tom Cunningham www.ExtrusionTechnicalServices.com IP: Logged |

Thank's Tom, but the equipment we are currently using is used machinery that we have adapted for our application. we are now at the stage of production where we feel that it is time to update so that we can develop and improve our process. IP: Logged |

You can find screw design guides for uncured silicone here: http://www.dowcorning.com/content/rubber/rubberprocess/rubber_extrude.asp?wt.srch=1 Should not the silicone be cured during or post extrusion? If this is insufficient we can discuss the use of extrusion screw simulation software for screw design optimization. In one of the packages I have there is a listing for "Crosslinkable" silicone material. ------------------ Tom Cunningham www.ExtrusionTechnicalServices.com IP: Logged |

Hi Tom, We do cure the silicon during production through a shock zone and oven, then we post cure in a large oven, what we are aiming to achieve is more throughput and greater consistancy. even though the product we are producing is good we have made improvements by increasing the efficiancy of our cooling system and we feel can improve further by updating our plant. clive.
