Does anyone know if ABS can be extruded into profiles using a 65mm extruder with a 25:1 L/D, and 2.6 compression ratio?

What about LDPE, with the same machine using a 3.3 compression ratio?

The answer somewhat depends on the die resistance, RPMs and so on.

I've been designing screws for 25 years and I'm not smart enough to know the answers to you questions without a lot more detail and an extrusion simulation program.

You could always just try them.

A proper screw will make it possible. The screw design will depend on you barrel dimensions, drive, polymer rheology and properties, and other factors. You can then define what is the possible flow rate you can obtain at the product temperature that you desire.

A good screw design is the key.

It is advisible to get some data with the equipment that you have for the polymer (ABS) that you intend to process. Even if it does not process well, the data are invalueable to getting a good design.

The issue is not so much "can you", as "can you at an acceptable quality level and a rate that covers the cost of doing so".

I presume that at an LD of 25:1, your barrel isn't vented, so you'll need to dry the ABS (2-4 hours hot air dryer@80-85C, Desiccant 1-2Hrs @80C). A compression ratio of 2.7-3.1 is recommended for a single stage screw running ABS- so you are not too far of the money there.

For ABS profiles you'll be looking for a melt temp of 230C-245C- I've got a sheet extrusion back ground so I can't help any with die design. But ABS is similar to PVC in that it thermally degrades if there are stagnant zones in the Die or Adaptors, or if the material is held at processing temps for more than 4-5 mins, so you'll want to check your die etc out.

Hi,
why dont you run both ABS and PE on the same compression ration screw.L/D is fine but if you have 30:1 for ABS it would be better, and with venting.PE doesn't matter any L/D over 22:1 is fine.
call for any extrusion equipment requirments.
