I got some literature from a extruder barrel heater manufacturer that claimed it's air cooled barrel heaters were a "Green" alternative to water cooled barrel heaters. Up to 20% less energy consumption they said. I wonder why that is? Energy is extracted from the extruder by air or water. Water cooled extruders have been shown to be able to remove more heat, but the energy balance should be the same. Either the energy goes down the drain, into the air or down the line with the polymer. The computer models I run don't care if air or water is used, just that air cooling can't move as much heat after a certain level.

The only case I can come up with where air cooling might be more energy efficient is if the water cooling was set up wrong, and cycling the zone too cool at times. Air cooling is less likely to do this. This is a special case however and should not be used in an energy accounting.

I can only conclude that the marketing guys got their hands on this and are selling some Pseudo-Science.
