Hello, is there a type of screw better to run PE. I'm having difficulties running 100% pe monofilament. I'm not sure what type of screw is in the extruder but I have a barrier type available to me. The extruder pressure would drop to zero or is max-ing out and shutting down the extruder at random. Very frustrating. Also the monfilament is breaking at the head. I tried raising the temp in the head zone and raising the quench tank water level. Any help would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks IP: Logged |

Could be a mis-match between the resin and the screw design. I generally prefer barrier screws. ------------------ Tom Cunningham www.ExtrusionTechnicalServices.com IP: Logged |

Hello Tom, Are barrier screws usually used to run pe. We were thinking more of a single flute is the one more commonly used but this is just guessing and not that much experience with it just the experience we have with our extruder. This happens everytime we try to run pe. We usually need to purge with a pp to get the extruder to run without shutting down and then switch over to the pe. Is any type of process aid used when running pe or is it "add pe and run as usual. I ran the pe before with some success but usually ended up in yarn breakage and a restring or the extruder shutting down due to pressure spike. I dont know what changed but the thing will not stay running now! IP: Logged |

Most PEs are easy to run, unless you are using extremely high or low viscosity. A barrier screw, when correctly designed for the target resin, can run almost any resin type. If you have another screw to try, and it is a barrier screw, I would not hesitate to give it a shot. You should also consider that something else is wrong with the extruder or the drive system. A dead barrel zone heater half can cause the problems you are having. ------------------ Tom Cunningham www.ExtrusionTechnicalServices.com IP: Logged |

Thanks Tom I do have one zone not coming up to full temp by a few degrees. I do need to have a look at that. What is considered a high or low viscosity? IP: Logged |

For PE: High visocisty MFI<1 Or something like that. ------------------ Tom Cunningham www.ExtrusionTechnicalServices.com IP: Logged |
