What would be the best starting point in looking at changing from a LDPE to a blend of LLDPE plus LDPE say 50 to 60% LLDPE? Would a look at a screw change from our 30/1, 6" that has a maddock flute section on the end? The Ext. motor is a 500 hp. We use a magnum sheet die 66" opening width and 4mm gap on die lip. WE have 6 extruder zones at a temperature of 365,385,390,405,405,405 F. Die zones 420 F. RPM of motor in the range of 1800 to 2200.

John Perdikoulias of Compuplast was kind enough to offer this reply:

"The biggest issue will be motor power (amps and torque) and maybe die pressure. They should plan some experiments using different percentages of LLDPE to see how the power requirements and pressure increase with increasing amounts of LLDPE. If they have sufficient power, then they can consider a new screw as the LDPE screw will most likely overheat the LLDPE. If they don't have enought power, they may be able to reduce the maximum screw speed to get more torque but this may pose a risk to the gear box depending on the safety factor available. They should consult with an equipment manufacture about this."

John offer extrusion modeling software. Please check out his web site at www.compuplast.ca
