How can I determine how much nip force(pli) I am generating in my 3 roll stack? And are there any ballparks for adequate nip pressure for sheet extrusion?IP: Logged |

G'day AlanThe information you're looking for can be found in a paper by Richard Palmer of New Castle Industries Inc (New Castle, PA 16107), its title is "Roll Design- A Review Of The Basics". Briefly to calculate roll load (PLI), work out the area of the piston face of your actuation device (air cylinder), then calculate roll loading using the formula: PLI=(2*A*P)/L Where PLI= roll loading (pounds per linear inch) A= cylinder area P= system pressure (PSI) L= lenght of load on roll face(inches) This formula assumes the actuation devices are direct acting, if they work via a lever then you would need to use a force multiplier. PLI is just an estimate because of the fluid nature of polymers. Steve Hodgson
