I was wondering what process people's views are on ceramic versus mica heater bands, particularly in use on large dies. My understanding is that in Europe mica bands are more common than in North America? What are the disadvantages/advantages of each, in terms of performance, durability and energy consumption? Which would you prefer to have on a die?IP: Logged |

I don't think you should use a micaband. If you have space limitations, a minerally insulated (MI) heater is okay (although slightly more expensive than micaband). Best bet for a die is the Starflex heater- they use a grooved aluminum shoe with Calrod elements. These seem to be the most reliable / durable. Their small ones look like this- http://www.glennelectricheater.com/starflex.htm they can also come in much larger sizes (although they might have to be custom-made, which has a long lead time). Ceramic are just too fragile, IMO. They are efficient, but people tend to be rough on their machinery (standing on things that weren't meant for it, etc.). -Bob Cunningham [This message has been edited by Bob Cunningham (edited September 12, 2003).] [This message has been edited by Bob Cunningham (edited September 12, 2003).] IP: Logged |
