The above images of a flat spiral die and a spiral mandrel die were provided by John Perdikoulias of Compuplast Canada. In my estimation John is the premier designer of these types of dies. Compuplast also sells simulation software to design these dies and can teach anyone to do it. In another post I mentioned an upcoming Compuplast seminar that will discuss these dies along with other extrusion related topics. Die design for HMWHDPE has channels that are typically deeper and wider than traditional PE dies. This is done because of the higher viscosity of the resin. To provide the correct and even distribution of material the die's land lengths of the spirals of the die are wider also. Some of the other differences involve minimizing the residence time of material flowing through the die through die design and streamlining.
