Are you looking to control the average thickness, or the thickness profile?

Hi, Bob. The average thickness. A layflat measuring system would be perfect in my opinion?

There are two approaches to this- you can either control extruder speed or nip speed. I recommend that you control nip speed, so that film properties are kept consistent.

If you are looking to only control average thickness, you can either use a gauge on the bubble (such as a Kundig oscillating capacitance gauge) or a layflat gauge (such as a nuclear or IR gauge from NDC/Infrared Engineering).

If you have a rotating die, then either gauge may miss out on some "tower" effects- an oscillating hauloff combined with a layflat gauge will give you the most accurate picture (but is also a very expensive arrangement).

I would recommend that you contact either NDC or Kundig (or pehaps another gauge manufacturer if you are familiar with them) for a discussion of your particular application. My company can incorporate this control into a complete line control package, but quite honestly it is too complicated/sophistocated (read: expensive) for this type of project.

If you want contact information for NDC or Kundig, let me know and I will post their websites.
