With one of our extruders (90 mm) we often need to change the screw when we change from PVC/PE to LS0H/LSF compounds. The screw changeover generally causes a loss of 45 to 60 minutes of to heat the new screw in the barrel. Is it possible to heat the screw off line outside the barrel using flexible heaters and cut-down the time lost in heating the screw in the barrel. Any ideas would be welcome.

Good idea, but potentially a couple of issues doing this;

Don't heat the feed section.

Extrusion stability is dependent on thermal stability. Thermal stability takes a while to acheive because heat transfer is slow. So you would likely want to heat the screw to very precise temperatures to gain any time savings.

Perhaps an old worn barrel, which does not include the feed throat, heaters and temperature controllers could do the job. I would apply air cooling to the screw in the feed area.

Good luck.

Dear Mr. Cunnigham,
Thank you for your reply. Since we do not have an old worn out barrel, I was thinking if the heating could be done by some kind of wrappable heaters with controllers. The idea may be sound very bizarre to you, maybe any help from you would be welcome.

Meanwhile I am on the lookout for a wornout barrel.
