I am extruding a polypropylene blend on a 27mm 36D twin-screw extruder. I want to mount a hopper loader directly onto the extruder. Is there any potential risk in flood feeding the extruder as opposed to starve feeding? I know that the mixing capacity will probably be reduced but this is not critical to me at the moment. I have heard that flood feeding can cause excessive wear?

I've heard of Krammer Feeder that if installed on a twin screw can potentially cause wear but more importantly special attention must be paid to the amount of downward force being applied.

Most twin screws use a "metering" horizontal feeder in order to control the amount of material entering the feed zone. However, if the compound bulk density is on the low side, possibly a "crammer-feeder" vertical screw in the hopper to provide a more positive material pressure on the feed zone would be helpful. Screw/barrel wear should not be a problem, unless the material is abrasive to the metal surfaces.
