Polypropylene twin screw extruder is generating a lot of fines alongwith product pellets. However, pellet quality is good. After cutting of pellets by cutter rotor (12 blades), pellets are conveyed by water to dryer where water is separated and recycled back for the same process. The filters in recycle line are chocking very frequently due to high fines(dust) genetaion.
Can any body please give some clue for the reasons of fines generation?

I think Berstorff published a paper on this subject in the past. It had to do with cutter velocity and pellet formation problems at high cutter speed. I'll see if I can find it.

Hi,

If the fine dust does not affect the quality of your product and only affects the recycled water, I would suggest to replace the filter with a unit which automatically backwashes. This will reduce the choking of the water flow as low water flow into the cutter might cause it to choke with pellets as well.

Tom, it would be nice if you could obtain the paper. I am very interested in the paper too. Thanks

Still looking for the paper.

An inquiry into Berstorff has not been answered yet.
