I intend to convert my 130mm diameter twin screw co- rotating compounding machine into a sheet extruder. I plan to machine the existing barrel so I can insert a new liner with two separate bore of 80 mm diameter. This means to say that I will be using 2 separate screws one on each bore. It’s like a two extruder contained in one barrel. The discharge of each screw will meet at the last barrel section; pass through a screen, to die adaptor then finally to the die. At the feed section, I will use 1 common hopper since I will only process one type of material at a time. My existing gear box has a speed ratio of 1:18.
My questions are as fallows:
1.Is the idea of 1 piece barrel with two separate bore with 2 separate screw of the same configuration will work?
2.What will be the diameter of the last barrel section to accommodate the output of each screw? The bore I am referring to is the one on the screen side.
3.Using 2 piece separate screw of 80 mm diameter each, what would be the drive horse power needed to drive the system? I intend to sheet out ABS, PE, PP & PS one type of material at a time.
4.Have any one heard of a machine of this set up before?
5.If I will be using a scew with L/D ratio of 38:1 and at a screw speed of 80 rpm, what throughput should I expect?
Any advice and comment is highly appreciated.

Cancy,

JSW makes an extruder in the configuration you have described. It is for compounding only.

You will need a gear pump in order to acheive any kind of a stable thickness.

You will need to starve feed the extruder.

I have been involved in the design of like processes. If you need some professional help please call.
