I'm currently doing a industrial feasibility study on a new process involving a twin-screw extruder. For this, I need information concerning the day to day maintenance and also the breakdown maintenance.
If you could please look over the following questions, I would appreciate any input anyone can give regarding any of these questions.
Thank you for your time
Day to day maintenance:
1-How often is it necessary to make maintenance?
2-How long does it take?
3-How many workers is it necessary? their qualification?
4-Which componnent need to be spared?

Breakdown maintenance:
What are the main breakdowns?
How often do they occur?
Breakdown hazards?

Thank you very much

Joel

Dear Joel,
It is very difficult to decide on a perfect maintenance system.
regarding yr quiries:
The frequency of day to day maintenance will be there on the manual supplied along with the machine. The time required per maintenance depends on the experience of the staff as also the tools available. The staff should atleast have the basic technical qualification in the field he is going to attend maintenance work. They should be guided by a well qualified manager. The spares required are: -Critical, the items without which the machine will stop: scarce, the items which are not available immediately and requires long lead time when ordered:consumables, the items like grease, oil etc...:. It all depends on what amount u r able to allocate for the inventory. The breakdown maintenance are usually unpredictable and this can to a certain extent be reduced if the maintenance team is alert and notice the telltale signs of impending breakdown. The operating systems should be well maintained and the operators of the machine should also be attentive during processing which will reduce the chances of breakdowns.
regards,
ravi.

Thank you Ravi for your reply,
in order to evaluate the day to day maintenance, I will look at the manual of our laboratory extruder but I will be interested in getting information about industrial size extruder whose throughput is for exemple around 700kg/hours.
Ravi (or any kind person), could you answer my questions regarding your own maintenance management and plan history.
I would appreciate also to know which extruder parameter is critical for the maintenance(an increase of this parameter increase for exemple the frequency of day to day maintenance)
thank you very much for your time

Joel,
Again, as inferred by ravi, it all depends on recommended maintenance and in-house maintenance programs. For example, will only preventive maintenance be performed or will be predictive be implemented as well? Daily walk-arounds would include thermocouples, cooling tank temperature / levels etc., however, it is hard to estimate how long actual break down repairs will take without precedent. Who is your part supplier for elements (if segmented), barrel sections etc. and what are the associated parts availabilities and lead times? You may have to establish this information before making an informed decision.
