Here's a question for you admin/personnel types. We have the problems of cliques and gangs at our factory. If you aren’t “chosen” by them then they will force you out. If you don’t catch the trainer’s eye then she will give you short-shit and submit false documents stating you were trained on stuff you weren’t trained on. Others will dump all their work on new people, work that the new people don’t know how to do. If you survive the first thee days they will sabotage your equipment, tamper with the product and alter the records to make you look bad. Management seems to feel this is “Teamwork” so they don’t do anything about it….Anyone else have this problem? Now, short of finding another job (NOT an option here in upstate New York!) what can we the fed-up and angry do about this? Looking for ideas and suggestions we the operators can use at the shop-floor level. Remember, we have no management support because they don’t see anything wrong with a 100% turnover and they can’t accept the fact that something is WRONG…. Thank! Brian “Styrofoam Man” Richard Injection Molding, Thermoforming And General Good Worker---For Hire!

Is it just me, or does anyone else have a problem with the preocupation of creating "teams". Which seems to be a way for the folk who are earning the bucks, to "pass the buck" onto people who aren't. They generally don't pass on the authority to spend a buck or two to sort problems out either. And then to really drive a stake into the team concept, they bring in individual performance appraisals. Steve PS- Richard, your work place sounds awful, do what ever you can to get out. Consider joining SPE, do as many courses as you can. IP: Logged |

The latest from Managment is to "empower" all B and C class operators to shut down the thermoforming lines and to correct any and all process problems. However, Buliding Two's forman has decided to lock the controls so we can't tamper with them and we're under orders not to stop the lines unless some one is "in the process of getting injured..." Steve H... I am a SPE member, and I'm enrolling in the NYPRO program as I speak... Soon, Styrofoam Man will be a force to reckon with.... IP: Logged |

Hi BrianSounds like you're on the case- have a read of some of the threads at Plastics.com, there are some horror stories there too. Makes me wonder how industry functions, when the vital ingrediant is treated so shabbily. As well as "trade" courses, it might be worth looking at a business studies/management degree course, the "suits" love bits of paper. These can be done by correspondance, and then you can carry on earning while studying. IP: Logged |

Well, I'm about to loose this job because of transport trouble... Imagain a job that fires people because they take two days off to get thier car fixed! Anyway...Already have 5 years in Injection Molding so the NYPRO courses should be a boost. Getting into this current Thermoforming job was a mistake, one that appears to be correcting itself... Any good plastic-related job-search sites out there?

Most managers don't really understand the meaning of empowerment or the team concept. One guy I worked for thought the team concept meant everyone on the team should listen to what he said. Any discussion and you were branded "Not a team player". The older a manager is, the less likely they are to understand new management concepts. They were all raised under the "Do what I say now or be fired!" management style. A tough habit to break. So I run when I hear "Team". The reality is that there is much to be done, and so few good managers to help do it. Tom C.

There has been a massive Re-Org... Seems our complaints have been heard. For the first time in years there will be preformance reviews... New leadership... For the time being things are going well. We'll see! IP: Logged |
