Ok, Where I work we have this problem. The company has changed hands so often that people are paranoid about "what's next." As a result, all of the smart people left, leaving the idots, jerks, and sleeze behind.

These people complain that there are problems... But when you come up with a solution they whine "But this is the way we've always done it! We can't CHANGE it!" They complan that there are not enough workers at the plant, yet they spend all day tormenting the temps and driving them away to because they "MIGHT" steal thier jobs.

How does one overcome this? Replacing the oldtimers is not an option. How can we "reopen" thier minds? Or is it a lost cause?

Give them a part of the action.

If they generate a 20% improvement in productivity, give them a 20% bonus. All other overheads remain the same, so the company gets something also.

People will not put an extra effort into anything unless they see that they can be rewarded by at least 20%.

Dispite the protest of management, this type of program will result in large changes in the organization's approach.

I have sold this method in the past to managment by indicating that nothing will be paid unless productivity increases. What is ther to lose?

You need to help these "oldtimers" feel like they are actually appreciated and that if they do have an idea about how to solve a problem that it will actually be listened to. People are often resistant to change when they have no input into the problem solving process. You also need to get tough on folks who are abusing other people. Having people around who treat others like crap brings the whole crew down.

Problem has long since been solved. We no longer work there... In fact I started a small injection-molding/extrusion blowmolding operation behind my Uncle's machine shop this past spring.

But thanks for the advice.
