We are presently straightening screws after weld on a hydraulic press. This is causing the welds to crack.I am going to start starightening using heat, does anyone have a good practice for this or any good advice.Or is there somewhere I can go to learn more on this procedure.? Thanks very much in advance.

I have never made screws, but I have bought a lot of screws with hardfacing and crack problems.

From what I've heard you need to do some or all of the following things;

Buy the bar stock already heat treated and stress relieved.

Straighten the screw after cutting and before hardfacing.

Apply hardfacing to a screw which is hot. How hot I don't know. Allow the screw to cool very slowly in vermiculite.

Then grind the hardface.

Only minor straigtening should be required
after this procedure. Usually I've seen guys do it with a rubber mallet.
