I am interested in extruding soybeans for the purpose of extracting oil which will eventually be converted to diesel fuel. I have not been able to find an affordable used extruder and was wondering what would be required to build one. I'm thinking I could buy a barrel, screw and dies; build a frame, attach a motor and start extruding. The extruders I have researched seem to be in the 25 - 50 horsepower range. I would probably go for something a little smaller maybe not larger than 15 horsepower and am hoping for some advice on sizing the barrel and screw and also on the dies typically used in soybean extrusion. Please help.

People tend to start building their own extruders after they have some expereince operating and maintaining commercial units. That way you gain from the almost 100 years of experience that has gone into these machines already.

Tom,

I posted a note on feedscrewdesign.com which you replied to. Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking the science in extruders is primarily in the screw, barrel and dies. I would plan to buy these components and assemble them. I was looking for some guidance regarding they type of screw, barrel and dies would be best suited for soybeans. Sizing these components for a 15 horsepower motor would also be helpful. I would love to just buy a commercial extruder but cannot find one in this size range that I can afford. If you can direct me to one I would be most appreciative. In extruding soybeans, what are the figures of merit for the end product? I know extruding them reduces them to a more optimum condition for extracting their oil but is that optimum condition a particular size, or temperature, or something else?
