I'd like to get input on ways to improve my chances of landing a job in the plastics industry. I have a BS degree in chemical engineering. My professional experience (~9yrs) has been in semiconductor manufacturing (electronic chip mfg). Thanks in advance.

There seems to be a strong demand for process engineers in the $50-60K/yr range, but you need experience. Otherwise the plastics industry in the US is suffering from significant foreign competition, and the recession, so demand for professionals is weak.

What would make you think of leaving the semiconductor industry?

First of all, being located in TX is a good start. Many many plastics companies there.

You can contact a myriad of professional Headhunters, as there are Plastics Company's around who look for inexperianced people who "have different eyes" - meaning that they want someone with no experiance.

Your background in semi-conductors should fit in somewhere. However, to match your current earnings may be the critical point of entry.

Thanks for the input. I'd like to try a different industry. Semiconductor/electronics mfg seems very unstable, lots of up/downs. I think I've seen layoffs just about every year I've worked in this industry. Also I'm interested in plant operations.
The pay is good is semiconductors mfg but I'm willing to take a pay-cut if I find the right opportunity.
