We construct augers at times by taking a pipe of diameter D and weld several flights of length L to it. The flights are made of sheetmetel disks with an inside diameter determined by the following. A string is taken and placed on the pipe surface from where one flight weld begins to where it ends. The length of the string will then become the circumference of the inside hole cut on the disk. The formula then becomes:
ID = (string length)/Pi.
This formua is not exact however, and gets worse if the pipe diameter is more then one inch. Then the flight fits too tight or not at all. What am I missing? If intrested in helping but you need more info I can send an attached drawing.
