I am new engineer that is new to extrusion. We currently extrude PE .027in pipe sleeve, ABS octogon rod, PP plumbers tape and rubber hose. We are trying to now extrude 1/8in thick foam pipe insulation at about 2in dia. After researching I thought our current extruder could be used to accomplish this. Our screw is a 24:1, which is a little small, but I think it will work. I tested the process with LDPE and a clariant adc masterbatch called hydrocerol bih-40. I tried many diff. barrel temps but it worked best at zones 1-4 330,370,390,360, the adapter and screen at 300 and the die zones at 290F. The 3.5in dia screw rpms were at 15-20. I tried adjusting the concentration, rpms, and temps, but I cannot get the gas cells large enough; they are the size of a sewing needle tip. I was hoping to reduce density by around 70%, but I am barely at 10%. Cell structure is even, no voids. What suggestions do you have to increase the cell size and reduce density. I am pretty sure the cba is decomposing all the way, but I can't tell because the masterbatch is not colored. I don't have any experience with foam extrusion, so any help is appreciated. Also, the consistancy I would like of the finished product is much like packaging foam, but in a tube form. Thanks for the help.
