I want to compound Nylon66 and add Glass fibre(33%) as well as a powder(25%). At the moment the strands that exits the die are very brittle and breaks off. What screwtype/design is required. How should the additives be fed into the extruder? What about venting?

Hi,Tom. Sorry for not being clear about the process.
I'm using a twinscrew with Nylon screws.
The powder is a flame retardant. The glass fibre is fed in downstream through a side-arm feeder.I've tried to feed the FR through the side-arm feeder as well. I also tried to mix the FR with the polymer and feeding it into the throat.(GF always added downstream through side-arm) I hope this is more clearer. Regards.

I would suspect the flame retardent as the problem. Most don't do well in Nylon. Many FR materials break down at Nylon's processing temperatures, and I believe I've heard something about Nylons acidic nature causing a problem. I see that there are FR grades of Nylon listed, so check with your supplier for compatible materials. If you don't think this is the source of the problem, then I would try and extrude the Nylon alone, then Nylon+Glass, the Nylon+FR and see if anything comes out well. Let us know the results.
