Without a vent diverter you will get vent flow. Without the diverter the extruder screw flight would pass by the sharp edge of the vent hole and a small amount of material would be picked off every revolution of the screw. In short order you will accumulate enough material in the vent to flow out, or block it. Proper vent diverter design prevents this by tapering the transition from the vent hole to the barrel inside surface.
